Video Game Controller

Video game technology has come a long way over the past 30 years. We’ve seen arcade games go from one room heavy machinery to hand held devices that can access the Internet. There are many different gaming options, with a wide range of video game controllers.

The definition of a game controller is just that, a device used to control characters, or objects in a video game. The controller connects to the game device, Xbox, Play station 3, Wii, etc., and it’s sole purpose is to control your character. Over the years it has evolved to many options including (but not limited to) gamepad, trackball, joystick, and steering wheel.

The Video Game Controller has evolved over time

The gamepad controller is the most common video game controller out there. It’s a relatively small handheld object where you utilize your thumbs to access the action buttons. Most of the present day game consoles use a gamepad, or gamepad variation to maneuver the characters.

The action buttons vary from console to console but the basic idea is similar. Generally on the left is the up, down, left and right buttons; in the center is the “start, and/or home” buttons”; and the right is the jump, fire, etc buttons. Sometimes there is a button underneath or on the bottom of the controller that is accessed by your index finger. This is usually used to make special moves, or combinations during a video game.

TRACKBALL CONTROLLER

The trackball video game controller is simply an upside down mouse that controls computer games. It is controlled by the palm of your hand, so it doesn’t require a “back and fourth” action of the mouse. This helps you move the character/object faster than using a traditional mouse.

JOYSTICK CONTROLLER

The joystick is a handheld stick with an action button on it that tilts in two axes. It’s mostly used in flight games, and helps control the character/object better than a gamepad or mouse.

STEERING WHEEL CONTROLLER

The steering wheel controller is a simulator steering wheel used in car racing video games or pc games. The Wii has a special steering wheel in which the Wii controller is placed inside. However, it’s generally a stand-alone controller that connects to the console or computer wirelessly or hard wired.

There are many different game consoles and systems out there, and the technology is only getting better. Today, we even have touch screen portable devices like the Nintendo DS that can access the Internet. With each passing year, there are more and more advances. There’s no telling what they’ll come up with next.

XboxPlaystation 3, and Wii game consoles also have special motion controllers options.
